25 Things About Me

I was tagged far too many times to avoid doing this. I'm just going to post it here because I couldn't choose just 25 people to tag.

1. My mother is the wisest person I know. I feel flattered when my husband calls me mini-Fadiah. \

2. I used to be able to do a headstand for as long as anyone was willing to watch. My mom used to have me do headstands for my younger sister Jude, while my mom force-fed her.

3. My favorite number is 3.

4. I am a terrible speller. Actually, up until 5th grade, I was a pretty terrible reader too. Oddly enough, I seem to excel at grammar.

5. As a child, my life goal was to a) be Alaa El-Buri, b) own all of Alaa El-Buri's possessions, or c) have blue eyes.

6. I often think I don't deserve my husband.

7. I have an unhealthy obsession with interior decorating. I went almost two years without curtains in my living room because I was holding out for curtains I really loved.

8. I hate it when people don't hustle. One of the most difficult things for me after my surgery was not being able to walk fast. Also, it is exceedingly bothersome when cars leave giant gaps during my commute, and allow other cars to sneak in front. I sometimes keep a mental count of how many cars behind I am during my commute because of gaps. Move people! That being said, I eat reeeaally slooow.

9. I don't enjoy talking on the phone, and I'm terrible at keeping in touch.

10. I feel like Allah (SWT) blessed me with the best of everything in life: the best mother, the best in-laws, the best friends, the best community, the best education, etc.

11. I can be extremely critical.

12. I once swallowed a giant bead in elementary school after a kid on the bus promised me $5. He never paid me.

13. I used to be the biggest procrastinator until I got married. Now I stay on top of everything.

14. I love to entertain, especially setting the table. Sometimes when I'm having a dinner party, I will first think of which plates I want to use, and then invite people based on how many plates I have in that set. It's sad, I know.

15. It took getting a deadly disease for me to finally be content with my body.

16. I know how to drive stick, but I do not know how to parallel park. Seriously, the woman who administered my driving test gave me step-by-step instructions..."Turn your wheel all the way to the left. Okay, now start reversing." I pray to God I don't have to retake the driving exam to get my New Jersey license.

17. My favorite ayah is, "Verily in the remembrance of God do hearts find rest!" (13:28)

18. I hate gum. I think it should be banned.

19. I love people intensely.

20. I used to be the pickiest eater in my family. When visiting Saudia I survived on a strict diet of mangoes and yogurt. But now I'm the most adventurous eater in the family.

21. I love Arabic names. I like finding out what they mean, and pretending to hoard them for my future kids.

22. I choose which grocery store to shop at based on its lighting. Fruits just look so much more delectable under the right light.

23. These past few months I've felt like a president leaving office, trying to figure out my lasting legacy.

24. I love pumpkin everything...especially pumpkin cheesecake.

25. I believe intentions are the most important thing in life. I fear I will fall into this group of people described in Surat Al-Kahf, "Say, 'shall I tell you. Whose actions are worst? Those whose struggles were lost in the life of the world, and they imagine that they are doing good work."

  2. rere-
I really like this list. It cracked me up and all of it is so true-i agree on you with a lot of it. you are so hilarious and most of those things you do, I kind of do something similar. (except for the gum one...I love gum and ever since i knew that west allows you to chew gum I became obsessed). also, I remeber you made pumpkin cheesecake when we were in NJ. Also, there is the fast thing...I just may be one of the slowest people ever..even my reaction time is very slow-we tested it once in science in sixth grade. anyways, this was awesome. I enjoy reading all of your posts. I love you

(by the way, it took me great effort to capitalize the beginnings of my sentences, because if its not on word, and it doesnt do it automatically, I never bother to capitalize)

    love you. --Jude

I think you wanted to be Alaa because Alaa was the one who you always looked up to as an immediate older sister and because Alaa is always very neat and owned neat stuff( right Alaa!!!!!) remember the white camry!!!!
I love you rehab, Alaa, Hind and Jude and abla Fadia before everybody.
Make du3aa for me and I will too. Kisses from me and my kids Aamenah, salahuddeen and Ayah

  10. Oh wow Rehab, this might be a serious problem. I **always** have gum on me, and almost always in my mouth. In fact, my biggest challenge in Ramadan is the gumless taste in my mouth. It almost gives me a headache!

I love you and your mom, and I'm sure when I meet them, all of your sisters too:) Every Missouri person I have met I loved so much I wished they were my best friend. If you weren't all moving away, I would set my goal to move there.

I completely relate to your hosting and decorating fetish. There's this constant internal battle between my practical side and my perfectionist side, and the outcome depends on which one is the victor...it changes case by case:)

Finally, I will share a reflection from a dear sister I never forgot. The first home Omar and I got invited to when we got married was a really nice family, may God always guide and protect them. It was a simple but happy home. Simply furnished, simply decorated, the people living in it simply dressed, but their love of God and His creation was far from simple. They made a very delicious yet simple meal. As the hostess was serving us she said, I know this is a simple meal but inshaAllah you will enjoy it. She explained that her intention was simplicity to help remove the burden of hosting we have placed on each other. Dr Salah Sultan had taught her that while the extravagant hostings are beautiful in intention of showing generosity and graciousness, they also have a risk of decreasing the brother and sisterhood amongst us. So much so that people will often choose not to invite people over, or not to visit them, because of the burden that comes with preparing to receive guests, or the burden of having to return the invitation.

When she said this, it made me feel so sad. It reminded me a lot of Egypt, and I vowed that would be one Egyptian custom I would try hard not to adopt! So, the result is that I love to have people over, I try my best to host graciously, but I also try hard never to set expectations of myself that will overwhelm me so that I would rather not host (that perfectionist practical battle again:)).

Can't wait to see you this weekend iA:) - even though it can't really be called hosting this time:)

  12. Ra7ub!!! I love this and all the other post mashallah. I agree with the hustling part and your obsession with pumpkin everything LOL. At times I would have liked to be Nevine, but that name was sort of forced on me. I filed for identity theft to get back my name after I graduated the same highschool Nevine graduated from. Sooo many people just confuse us. They even think we are twins whose names are Nevine and umm Nevine?! LOL
Thank you for giving us a peak into your life ;-)

    Love you Ra7ub!!!
